University of Connecticut School of Education

John Settlage is an educational researcher committed to reducing inequities within science education. As a university professor, he teaches future science teachers as well as offering research methods courses to doctoral students. His own research relies upon systems perspectives to understand school conditions associated with learning, teaching, and leadership. Currently, he is involved with two National Science Foundation projects. One is a conference grant being led by Brian A. Williams (Georgia State) which will engage academics from across the nation to compile foundational knowledge about equity-oriented science education. The other NSF project uses ecological modeling techniques to identify factors explaining STEM teacher retention and attrition, particularly within high-needs schools. With Sherry Southerland (Florida State) he is coeditor in chief of the journal Science Education. He enjoys outdoor activities and traveling with his wife Sue to whom he has been married for 35 years and counting.
