OPPORTUNITIES: NECSEM 2014 Call for Proposals

NORTHEAST CHAPTER OF THE SOCIETY FOR ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

2014 MEETING CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Northeast Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology (NECSEM) invites ethnomusicology students and faculty as well as scholars in related disciplines to submit abstracts for the NECSEM annual meeting to be held at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts just 45 minutes from Boston, on Saturday April 5th, 2014. Proposals for individual papers, panel discussions and lecture/performance demonstrations are welcome. We also invite proposals for short presentations by musical ensembles (please include an audio attachment or CD of one or two pieces). The President of NECSEM invites proposals as well for a roundtable discussion on the following topic: “Professional Trajectories in Ethnomusicology: Preparing for Today’s Job Market.” Students and scholars in all branches of music scholarship and related disciplines are encouraged to participate. Presentations will be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. An abstract (250 words maximum) should be emailed by Saturday, 1 February, 2014, to the president of NECSEM, David Pruett atdavid.pruett@umb.edu. Please put “NECSEM 2014 Proposal” in the subject header. Proposals for the Roundtable discussion should also be sent to David Pruett.

Please include the following in your proposal in this order:

–          your name

–          contact information (email and phone number)

–          institutional affiliation (students, please indicate if you are at the graduate or undergraduate level)

–          a title for your proposed project

–          a 250 word (maximum) abstract

–          anticipated audio/visual or other technological/special requirements

Participants with accepted proposals will be notified by February 22, 2014.

We are encouraging NECSEM members and presenters to arrive Friday April 4, as we will arrange a reception to take place that evening. We are also pleased to announce that, following paper sessions on Saturday, internationally renowned, Latin Grammy nominee, and Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto will be performing in concert on campus for conference attendees, Wheaton students and faculty, and the generally public.

Chapter prizes: NECSEM now awards two memorial prizes for outstanding papers presented by students at the chapter meeting: The Lise Waxer NECSEM Prize (undergraduate) and the James T. Koetting Prize (graduate). Students whose proposals have been accepted may apply for the appropriate prize by submitting their completed paper via email to David Pruett at david.pruett@umb.edu by Thursday, March 27, 2014(please indicate the prize for which you are applying in the subject header).
