Boston University Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) researcher, Katherine McCauley, grew spheres of purified airway cells from human stem cells. On the left, spheres of cells with a mutated CFTR gene, the cause of cystic fibrosis, have a [...]defective protein and do not swell when exposed to a drug called forskolin. Spheres containing cells with corrected genes (right) are able to swell. Cells like these may eventually allow a more personalized approach to cystic fibrosis treatment.
