Established in 1950 to distinguish faculty engaged in outstanding research, the University Lecture is one of Boston University’s oldest traditions and most valued honors. This year’s speaker is Jeremy Yudkin, music professor and chair [...]of the musicology and ethnomusicology department at the College of Fine Arts.
Laced with references ranging from Plato to composer Robert Schumann, Yudkin’s lecture, “Not a Note Too Many: Beethoven, Miles, and McCartney,†reflects on “what is great music, and how it is distinguished from music that is merely good.†To do this, Yudkin enlists three classics: Ludwig von Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, “Blue in Green†from the iconic Miles Davis album Kind of Blue, and Paul McCartney’s “I’ve Just Seen a Face,†from the Beatles album Help!
Hosted by the Office of the Provost on October 14, 2010.
