The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future held a conference, “The Future is Now: Urban Asia in the 21st Century,†on Oct. 8, 2014 in the Metcalf Trustee Center on Boston University’s campus. Experts [...]from BU and elsewhere explored various aspects of the social and environmental impacts of urbanization in Asia. The conference was co-sponsored by BU’s Pardee Center, the Initiative on Cities, the Center for the Study of Asia, Global Programs India Initiatives, and the Center for Global Health and Development, in collaboration with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and BU’s Metropolitan College.
Opening remarks were given by Anthony Janetos (Director, Pardee Center, BU), Graham Wilson (Co-Director, Initiative on Cities, BU), and Eugenio Menegon (Director, Center for the Study of Asia, BU).
The day consisted of three panels. The first panel, Idea of the City: The Asian Challenge, was moderated by Deepti Nijhawan (Director, Global Programs India Initiative, BU). Speakers included Bish Sanyal (Director, Special Program on Urban and Regional Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Annette Kim (Director, Spatial Analysis Lab, Price School of Public Policy, University of Southern California), and Adil Najam (Dean, Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, BU).

The first annual Gitner Lecture on September 18, 2014, is a discussion focused on what we need to learn, what we [...]need to know, and what we need to do to prepare for the next generation. Six CAS professors with diverse perspectives ranging from cyber security to carbon cycles are joined by respondents Anthony Janetos, Director of the Pardee Center for the Study for the Longer-Range Future; Adil Najam, Dean of the Pardee School of Global Studies; and Virginia Sapiro, Dean of CAS. Watch, learn, and think about our future as panelists discuss how their current fields of study can be leveraged to advance the human condition through discovery, teaching, and learning.

Panelists included Irit Altman [...](Biology, Boston University), Suchi Gopal (Earth & Environment, Boston University), Mauricio Arias (Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University), and Pardee Faculty Fellow Les Kaufman (Biology, BU), who served as moderator.
The panelists work together on an interdisciplinary study co-led by Boston University and Conservation International. Their research examines the impacts of human-induced changes to freshwater ecosystems that provide food and livelihoods for a large number of people in the Mekong Delta region of Cambodia.
