The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future held a conference, “The Future is Now: Urban Asia in the 21st Century,†on Oct. 8, 2014 in the Metcalf Trustee Center on Boston University’s campus. Experts [...]from BU and elsewhere explored various aspects of the social and environmental impacts of urbanization in Asia. The conference was co-sponsored by BU’s Pardee Center, the Initiative on Cities, the Center for the Study of Asia, Global Programs India Initiatives, and the Center for Global Health and Development, in collaboration with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and BU’s Metropolitan College.
The day consisted of three panels. The third panel, The City and Its Environment, was moderated by Edward Cunningham (Assistant Professor, Earth & Environment, BU). Speakers included Karen Seto (Professor, Geography and Urbanization, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies), Madhu Dutta-Koehler (Adjunct Professor, Metropolitan College, BU), and Susan Foster (Professor, School of Public Health, BU).
Following the panels, Prof. Janetos gave closing remarks and engaged the audience in a discussion about what they had learned throughout the day.

On Tuesday, February 4th, 2014, the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and The Center for Finance, Law & Policy at Boston University co-sponsored a seminar titled "Remittances for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and [...]Development." The seminar focused on findings from a 2013 Pardee Center Task Force Report on remittances to post-conflict states and featured Task Force co-conveners Donald F. Terry and John R. Harris, lead researcher Daivi Rodima-Taylor, and remittances expert Nikos Passas of Northeastern University. The Task Force report is available for download on the Publications page of the Pardee Center website.

The co-editors and contributing authors, Beena Sarwar, Moeed Yusuf and Prof. Shahla Haeri for the book South Asia 2060: Envisioning Regional Futures spoke about how they see the future of the region at a Pardee House Seminar on November 20. Hosted by [...]the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, the seminar was part of Boston University's programs during International Education Week.
Seminar moderator and book co-editor Prof. Adil Najam (BU International Relations, Earth & Environment) highlighted the complexities and contradictions inherent in the region as he presented five major themes distilled from the essays written by 47 contributing authors.

The conference included a special lunchtime address by Virginia Sapiro, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and a tribute to John R. Harris, a CAS professor of economics whose landmark 1970 paper on migration, unemployment, and development was recently selected as one of the top 20 papers published by the American Economic Review in the past 100 years.
Sponsored by the BU Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, in collaboration with the BU Global Development Program, the conference was organized by Kevin Gallagher, a CAS associate professor of international relations, Jonathon Simon, an SPH professor of international health and director of the BU Center for Global Health & Development, Dilip Mookherjee, a CAS professor of economics and director of the BU Institute for Economic Development, and Adil Najam, a CAS professor of international relations and director of the Pardee Center. Panel leaders discussed everything from global development policy to local programs that deliver education, health, and poverty alleviation services to rural villages in Africa and Asia.

A longtime advocate for women’s empowerment, renowned Indian choreographer and dancer Mallika Sarabhai strives to create social change through her art. “I always assumed that art was to talk about things that mattered,†she says, [...]“things that needed to break through walls and get to people. Sarabhai is co-director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts and holds a doctorate degree in organizational behavior. She came to international prominence when she landed the role of Draupadi in Peter Brook’s nine-hour play, The Mahabharata. A longtime activist for societal education, Sarabhai created Shakti: The Power of Women in 1989—a powerful dance response to a male-dominated society. Her stage productions tour throughout India and abroad raising awareness, highlighting crucial issues, and advocating for social change.
Sarabhai's presentation at the College of Fine Arts was followed by a panel conversation with BenjamÃn E. Juárez, dean of CFA , André de Quadros, a CFA professor of music, and Adil Najam, director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future.Â
