Upon the conclusion of her tenure as CAS dean, Virginia Sapiro plans to research how our higher education system developed, and the implications for the future of education in the US, among other projects. She delivered a Decanal Valedictory on the topic during the final faculty meeting of the semester on April 27.
In her valedictory, “The Coming Crisis in Higher Education, 1636-2036,” Dean Sapiro discusses the many challenges and opportunities facing colleges and universities in addition to the often-mentioned impact of technology, cost, and the retreat from public commitment to supporting higher education. You can read the full valedictory address here.
Dean Sapiro also took time to reflect on her eight years as dean and looked at what is next for her in articles for arts&sciences and BU Today. After leaving a legacy that has moved CAS/GRS forward in many different ways, she says in the near future there will be “a lot of gardening, cooking, travelling, paying attention to family and friends, and—oh my goodness—reading real books.”
