Ibram X. Kendi, professor of history, Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities, founder of the BU Center for Antiracist Research, and National Book Award winner, can add another accomplishment to his list: MacArthur Genius. With this award, Kendi receives a no-strings-attached, five-year gift of $625,000 “designed to provide recipients with the flexibility to pursue their own artistic, intellectual, and professional activities in the absence of specific obligations or reporting requirements,” according to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation website. Prior to this honor, Nancy Kopell, a William Fairfield Warren Professor and professor of mathematics at CAS, was the only MacArthur Fellow at BU.
