CGS Student Human Genome Poster Session
The Students and Faculty of Teams X and Y invited all members of the CGS community to attend their Scientific Poster Session on Friday, December 10, 2010 in the Katzenberg Center. There was a good turnout of students, faculty and staff, and a lively atmosphere on a Friday afternoon.
Professors Peter Busher and Andy Andres organized the poster session, a format widely used in scientific meetings. The researchers write a brief account of the purpose of their study, the methods used, the results found, and a summary of the conclusions. They are then free to interact with the audience, answering questions, handling criticisms, explaining nuances. The format is interactive and engaging, and the CGS students were enthusiastic and articulate.
Thirty-five student groups presented their research on how variations in specific human genes relate to the physical traits that are observed in the human population. The students engaged in discussions about the Human Genome Project, our present genetic knowledge and what every educated citizen should know as our genetic understanding advances.
