Arianne Chernock Named Next Associate Dean of the Faculty for Social Sciences
Arianne Chernock, Associate Professor of History, has agreed to serve as the next Associate Dean of the Faculty for Social Sciences. She will begin her term on July 1, 2022. Arianne has a long and outstanding record of university, college, and departmental service, which have prepared her well for this role, including serving as chair of the CAS Academic Policy Committee, Associate Chair of the Department of History, and as Acting Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs and Policies – among many other posts.
Arianne’s research focuses on modern British and European history, with an emphasis on gender, culture, politics, and the monarchy. She has developed a broad agenda on these topics, and she is widely respected as a diligent archivist and highly original scholar who can also convey her work to broader audiences. Her first book, Men and the Making of Modern British Feminism (Stanford University Press, 2010), which examines the forgotten but foundational contributions of men to the creation of the “rights of women” in Enlightenment Britain, received the John Ben Snow Foundation Prize, from the North American Conference on British Studies in 2011. Her second book, The Right to Rule and the Rights of Women: Queen Victoria and the Women’s Movement, has just been published with Cambridge University Press. Arianne is an elected member of the Royal Historical Society. She is also active and visible in conveying historical commentary to public audiences, appearing in media outlets such as CNN, Newsweek, and the New York Times. Additionally, she is an exemplary teacher and dedicated mentor. She was awarded the Gitner Teaching Award for excellence in teaching in 2018.
Arianne will be stepping into the role which has been held for the past four years by Nazli Kibria, Professor of Sociology. Nazli has been an exemplary leader and advocate for the social sciences. She was a driving force in the establishment of the Center, and is the ex officio member of the CISS steering committee.
