Maya Vaidya
Professor Maya Vaidya is a marketing and communications professional with nearly a decade of experience in media/influencer relations, social media marketing, brand building, community relations, and event strategy. She is currently a Marketing Manager on HubSpot’s Global Events team. Previously, Maya led and executed communications for Eataly Boston, former U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, and marlo marketing.
Dedicated to the art of effective communications, Maya is passionate about developing strategy centered around empathy, authenticity, and the successful dissemination of knowledge. Her classes focus on tactical skills, applicable theory, and real-world case studies. Maya’s goal is for students to leave the classroom empowered to make thoughtful, strategic decisions and grow in their careers.
Maya earned her M.S. in Public Relations from Boston University and her B.A. in Political Science, minor in Sustainability Studies, and certificate in International Relations from University of Florida. When she isn’t working or teaching, she loves spending quality time with her family and fiancé, exploring new corners of Boston, trying her hand at different recipes, and reading.
William Marx
William Marx is the Editor-in-Chief of the Arts Fuse. For just over four decades, he has written about arts and culture for print, broadcast, and online. He has regularly reviewed theater for National Public Radio Station WBUR and the Boston Globe and books for the Boston Phoenix and the Village Voice, He created and edited WBUR Online Arts, a cultural webzine that in 2004 won an Online Journalism Award for Specialty Journalism. In 2007 he created the Arts Fuse, an online magazine dedicated to covering arts and culture in Boston and throughout New England.
Erick Trickey
Erick Trickey is a regular contributor to POLITICO Magazine and the Washington Post’s Retropolis blog and an associate editor at Experience Magazine. A former staffer for Boston Magazine and Cleveland Magazine (where he was a City and Regional Magazine Awards’ Writer of the Year finalist), he’s also written for Smithsonian Magazine, The Boston Globe, TheAtlantic.com, Columbia Journalism Review, Harvard Law Bulletin, and Agence France-Presse. Beats and interests include U.S. politics, cities and transit, crime, science, arts & culture, and American history.
Janice Pieroni
Janice Pieroni’s entertainment experience includes working as an executive at Universal Studios, as a co-writer for Universal Studios and its affiliates, and as an assistant to Martin Scorsese. She is a member of Writers Guild of America.
Through Story Arts Management®, which Janice founded, she has worked with a national clientele to develop film, television, and book projects – placing approximately 25 client fiction or non-fiction book projects with publishers such as Simon & Schuster, W.W. Norton, Wiley, and others, and guiding numerous client screenplays into development with L.A. producers.
As an Adjunct Faculty Member at Boston University, Janice teaches undergraduate and graduate students in such courses as Writing the Television Pilot, Writing Episodic Drama for Television, and Screenwriting 1.
Janice also is a Senior Affiliated Faculty Member at Emerson College. At Emerson, Janice teaches Writing Television Pilots, Writing for Television, and Writing the Feature Film. In addition, she serves as a Thesis Reader for M.F.A. students.
At Emerson, she also has taught Screenwriting and The Business of Screenwriting in Emerson’s Screenwriting Certificate Program and Screenwriting in Emerson’s Pre-College Program.
A popular speaker, Janice has spoken at educational institutions such as Boston University, Harvard University, University of Massachusetts, Emerson College, and Amherst College, as well as at writers’ conferences, professional organizations, and continuing education venues.
She has produced or assisted with producing presentations by industry leaders, including by Pulitzer Prize, Academy Award, and Emmy winners. She has moderated or participated in industry panels, served as a judge for screenwriting, film competitions, and pitch festivals, and written articles about the industry.
Janice earned an undergraduate degree from Amherst College and a graduate degree from University of California at Berkeley. She also studied in the School of the Arts, Graduate Film Division, at Columbia University.
Maria Afzal
Maria Afzal works as an Educational Technologist at the office of Digital Learning and Innovation where she works with the BU faculty, staff and students on using instructional technologies such as ePortfolios, and Adobe Creative Cloud to support the exploration of Digital Multimedia expression in their teaching and learning.
Afzal has breadth and depth of interests and experiences and has worn a number of very different hats (Visual Designer, Multimedia Artist, Mobile/Web Developer, Online Course Designer & Facilitator, UX Researcher) and that gives her the ability to look at communication challenges from a unique perspective. In the classroom, she is always trying to make her UX/UI students think further about their designs, based on unbiased, inclusive and accessible user experience, not just simply by the look and feel.
Jeff Kahn
Jeff Kahn is an Emmy Award-winning writer and WGA member, who co-created The Ben Stiller Show. Some of Mr. Kahn’s TV credits include Austin Stores, All-American Girl, Dilbert, and Drawn Together.
He has TV writing deals with Sony and Castle Rock. He has written pilots for all the major networks. He also wrote for: MTV, The Disney Channel, F/X and Comedy Central. As an actor, Jeff’s been seen on Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, The Larry Sanders Show and Blossom. He was in the features films, Tropic Thunder, 40 Year Old Virgin and The Cable Guy as well.
Justin Shatraw
Justin Shatraw is a film and television writer who has worked on: WORDGIRL, NATURE CAT (PBSKids), and SONIC BOOM (Cartoon Network). He has developed projects with MondoMedia and Nickelodeon, as well as done marketing work for the National Geographic Channel.
Julie Dennehy
With thirty years of agency experience, Julie Dennehy, APR is proud to be part of the BU COM adjunct faculty sharing her insights with students of CM443: New Media & PR. A mentor and industry leader, Dennehy is looking forward to teaching and collaborating with students exploring the evolving world of digital and social media. Dennehy provides consumer and lifestyle PR expertise to organizations of all sizes, from global brands to local festivals and events.
Bianca Garcia
Bianca has 20 years of agency and brand experience, with a focus on media strategy development, omni-channel media planning and buying and nurturing key partner relationships.
She currently leads the global digital media capability at Finn Partners, an integrated marketing company. She has worked for globally renowned ad agencies like Digitas and Leo Burnett, as well as award-winning boutique ad agencies in Boston like Overdrive, Small Army, and Genuine and IPG Company. She has experience on both B2C and B2B, working for brands like: Victoria’s Secret, ASICS, Saucony, Harley-Davidson, Red Bull, Garmin, Staples, LoJack, John Hancock, Akamai and Pfizer.
Bianca grew up in the Philippines before moving to Boston. She is an advocate for utilizing data and audience-driven insights coupled with a vibrant dose of storytelling. During her free-time she works as a food blogger and influencer.
Janna Greenberg
Janna Greenberg has over 20 years of experience in the advertising industry. She started her career in advertising in Silicon Valley. Greenberg was at the forefront of the invention of digital advertising, helping to create some of the first brand and digital media campaigns.
As an ad professional at some of the world’s leading agencies such as Organic, AKQA, and Havas Media, Greenberg worked on a variety of brands including: Sprint, Fidelity, Visa and Clorox. She started her career in management consulting working for McKinsey and Accenture. She brings an element of strategic-framework-driven thinking to her classes. Greenberg is excited to share her lifetime of experience and love for this industry with her students.
