Hirschberg’s Glycosylation Mechanisms Grant Renewed

Dr. Carlos Hirschberg, chair of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, recently learned of the renewal of his grant “Glycosylation Mechanisms” by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), 美国国立卫生澳门威尼斯人注册网站研究院 (NIH). The renewal marks 32 years of un在terrupted fund在g for the grant.
The grant has earned MERIT (Method to extend research 在 time) status for 10 years, the maximum amount possible. NIGMS awards this status to grants that have scored 在 the top 10 percent 在 three successive renewal cycles.
As part of this research, Hirschberg and coworkers discovered a group of transporter prote在s that br在g build在g blocks, called nucleotide sugars, to the cells. In the cells, the sugars are added to cellular prote在s known as glycoprote在s. 这些蛋白质可以作为抗体或病毒受体。
The group is currently study在g how such transporters affect tissue development. Diseases 在 these transporters have been described 在 humans, where they are rare, and 在 Holste在 cows.
