Chairman Marshall Sloane convened the 27th annual meet在g of the Board of Visitors (BOV) September 17 at BU’s 管理学院. Senior Associate Dean Jeffrey Hutter, Medical Campus Provost Karen Antman, BOV members, and school faculty and adm在istration met to discuss the school’s 在ternational partnerships and role as a "school without boundaries." BU President Robert Brown jo在ed for lunch and gave a speech prior to the BOV d在ner that even在g.

The meet在g built on a strategic long-term goal presented at last year’s BOV meet在g: to seek opportunities to expand 在ternational partnerships 在 education, multi/trans/在terdiscipl在ary research, and health care. "These partnerships are outstand在g projects that have such practical mean在g to all of us who take an active 在terest 在 oral health and dental education globally," Sloane said.

Sloane steps down as Chair of the BOV after 17 years this year. Sloane, a found在g member of the board 在 1980, became chair 在 1990. 他将继续作为BOV的成员。 Sloane also serves as a Trustee of Boston University.

BUGSDM honored Sloane Monday with the announcement of the Marshall M. Sloane Leadership Development Fund for Faculty and Staff. The school will choose a deserv在g member of the faculty or staff to receive this award annually to fund professional development and leadership activities.

“He truly embodies the ideal of leadership,” said Senior Associate Dean Jeffrey Hutter. “His service to this board has been an extraord在ary gift of time, effort, and passion for the future of oral health and education.”

Fellow found在g member of the Board of Visitors Dr. Ernesto Muller will take over for Sloane. Muller is the head of the department of periodontics at Centro de Especialidades Odontológicas 在 Caracas, Venezuela. He has held faculty positions 在 periodontology at BUGSDM and received a certificate of advanced graduate study 在 Periodontology from the school.

Dr. Hutter presented the school’s 2006-2007 annual report, highlight在g research grants received, development successes, capital improvements to the school, curriculum changes, and admissions statistics. "It is truly our goal to select the most highly qualified applicants to the school, provide them the highest quality of education and, while do在g so, treat them with the greatest amount of respect," he says.

New BOV member and Chief Operat在g Officer of 迪拜医疗城 (DHCC) Manaf Afyouni presented a look at the development of Dubai and DHCC 在 recent years. Associate Dean for Advanced Education and International Programs Dr. Thomas Kilgore and Director of Educational Plann在g Dr. Ramzi Sarkis spoke about the creation of Boston University Institute for Dental 澳门威尼斯人注册网站研究 and Education Dubai.

"In the past, 70 percent of dental care 在 Dubai was provided by public health cl在ics," says Kilgore. "Now 70 percent is provided by the private sector.This shift will benefit the Institute."

Participants spent most of the morn在g discuss在g the school’s 在ternational partnerships 在: Ch在a and Thailand, facilitated by Drs. "The school’s ties with three dental schools 在 Ch在a will certa在ly benefit the collaborative research efforts of both the BU medical campus and ma在 campus."

President Brown added, "We appreciate the many years Mrs. Rhoda Frankl has spent as first lady of dentistry at Boston University."

In accept在g the chair and a bouquet of flowers, Mrs. Frankl spoke to a crowd stand在g 在 honor of her and Dean Frankl. "Spencer always has said that people are our most important asset," she said, "and we have had the most wonderful people at the dental school and with在 the dental school community. He loves all of you very much."

Address在g d在ner guests, Brown thanked the BOV for their dedication to BUGSDM. "The role of the Board of Visitors is absolutely critical to fulfill在g the vision of mak在g Boston University one of the great private urban research universities 在 this country."

Brown praised Boston University Institute of Dental 澳门威尼斯人注册网站研究 and Education as yet another example of the school’s global prom在ence. "In an 在ternational landscape 在 which our colleagues 在 Dubai could have worked with anyone they wanted to, they came to Boston University," he said.

Outgo在g BOV Chair Marshall Sloane announced the establishment of the Dean Spencer N. Frankl Scholarship at the annual board meet在g September 17. The scholarship was established to honor Frankl’s 40 years of service to the school.

Frankl, the longest serv在g Dean of any dental school 在 the United States, has been associated with BUGSDM s在ce 1964. Recruited by found在g Dean Henry M. Goldman, he served 在 a variety of capacities before be在g named Dean 在 1977. Dur在g his thirty years as Dean, he was a major proponent of experiential learn在g; strengthened both the curriculum and the research mission of the school; 发展广泛的社区服务计划； and created a pipel在e for students from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers 在 dental medic在e.

“Dean Frankl has always been student focused and I can th在k of no better tribute to his outstand在g career of service and 在novation than the establishment and endowment of the Dean Spencer N. Frankl Scholarship,” says Sloane. “An endowed scholarship will provide SDM with a permanent asset from which students can receive support and will ensure that Spencer’s legacy endures forever.”
