Success Seminar Prepares Students For Career

On November 5, an American Dental Association (ADA) and BU American Student Dental Association (ASDA) Success Seminar was held at the Dental School for a group of fourth-year DMD and second-year AS students. The seminar titled, "Practice Management for Seniors," was presented by Dr. Todd Christie.

The full-day seminar addressed practice management aspects of dentistry and ethical aspects of dental practice. It also featured useful information on ADA resources. ASDA, led by First Delegate Heather Parsons DMD 11, worked with the ADA’s Office of Student Affairs to help set up, organize, and schedule this year’s success events. The same seminar will also be held on February 25, 2011 for a second group of fourth-year DMD and second-year AS students, giving everyone in both classes the opportunity to attend.

This seminar is the fourth in a series of Success Seminars that Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) dental students attend during their time at the School. As first-year students they learn about how to make a smart start at dental school and address financial issues, dental career options, and tips for success in dental school. As second-year students they are given a professional preview that acquaints students with skills for the high-tech and high-touch dental practice of the future. During their third year, students learn successful career strategies necessary for professional success post-graduation, including how to find associateships and other employment opportunities, CV writing, and interviewing skills.

"These seminars are important because the topics they address are designed specifically for each class, to help them in Dental School and to help prepare for life after Dental School," explained Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese.

In addition to the valuable knowledge gained during the seminar, students also received a gift of an official GSDM Alumni Association baseball hat.

Photos from the seminar are available on the GSDM flickr account and also on the Facebook page.
