School Concerned With Men’s Oral Health

Men are less likely to seek preventive dental care and more likely to develop oral cancer and gum disease than women, according the the Academy of General Dentistry.
These perils of being male encouraged seven BUGSDM student volunteers and the Division of Community Health Programs to participate in Boston Medical Center’s Partnership for Men’s Health October 13. The four-hour event took place in the Moakley Building and offered the public free information on breast, prostate, and head and neck cancer; diabetes; hypertension; high blood pressure; osteoporosis; and oral health.
Free cancer screenings were key for the men who attended and BUGSDM set up several stations to screen for oral cancer. The school ran educational stations to discuss the connection between diabetes and oral health, tobacco’s effect on oral health, good habits such as brushing and flossing, and "meth mouth."
