ADA Foundation Awards Minority Dental Scholarships

Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) students, Erin Suzanne Arroyo DMD 11 and Christopher Alejandro Canizares DMD 11 were both awarded a $2,500 Minority Dental Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year by the ADA Foundation. These scholarships are given annually to outstanding second-year students who are identified as being underrepresented in dental school enrollment.

"On behalf of the entire BUGSDM community, I congratulate Erin and Christopher," said Dean Jeffrey Hutter. "Receiving this scholarship is an honor and both of these students are very deserving of this accolade."

Arroyo originally hails from Fairfax, California but was drawn to Boston after traveling here for business as part of the biochemistry job she had before enrolling at BUGSDM. After graduation she hopes to return to California to work in private practice. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity.

Canizares is from Sunrise, Florida and selected BUGSDM for dental school because it seemed a like the perfect fit for him with its great city location, exceptional faculty, and technologically advanced facilities like the Simulation Learning Center.

"I am honored to receive this scholarship," said Arroyo. Canizares added, "I’m proud to represent BUGSDM as one of the small group of twenty five students selected for this scholarship nationwide."

The ADA Foundation’s Minority Dental Student Scholarship Program is funded in part by Harry J. Bosworth Company, Proctor & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, and Sunstar Americas.
