BUSDM Helps at Diabetes Expo

For the second consecutive year BUSDM faculty and students provided oral health screenings and education at the Boston Diabetes Expo.

Seven BUSDM volunteers on March 18 screened 34 attendees at the Expo’s "Ask the Dentist" booth.

According to Kathy Lituri, clinical instructor of health policy and health services research, diabetes affects the entire body, including the mouth. When diabetes is not controlled properly, oral health problems may increase.

"Well controlled diabetes, good oral hygiene, and access to regular dental care is essential, even for diabetics who are also denture wearers," she says.

The Diabetes Expo was sponsored by the American Diabetes Association.
