GSDM Student Affairs hosted Senior Weekend, a series of pre-graduation events for pre-doctoral graduates, the weekend before commencement.

Senior Weekend kicked off Friday, May 10, 2013, with ASDA Hour at South End tapas restaurant Estragon for the DMD Class of 2013. Later that evening, the Advanced Standing Farewell Party took place at the Living Room in Boston.

Alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and pre-docs met at Norwood Country Club on Saturday for the fourth annual ASDA Golf Tournament. The event saw a new record for sponsorships. The sponsorship money funds ASDA events throughout the year, such as ASDA Hour, Coffee Hour, and national trips to ASDA events.

Two local companies offered generous hole-in-one prizes: Farmington Insurance, a cash prize of $7,500 on the 7th hole, and Rodman Ford, a two-year lease for the 13th hole. Unfortunately for participants, nobody made either hole-in-one try.

Players were more successful in other areas. Dr. Richard D’Innocenzo won the live auction for a football autographed by Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. The team called “English Reborn” took the whole Tournament. The team included DMD 14 students Ray English, Josh Gilbert, Steve Melnic, and Rich Zavada.

On Sunday, Student Affairs, Development & Alumni Relations, and the University Development Office hosted the Senior BBQ at the BU Pub, where students continued their quests toward knighthood.  Alumni, faculty, and staff attended in support of the graduates.

Entertainment was provided by The Mental Blocks, including graduates Chris Bickford, Michael Maya, and Habib Tarzi, Shervin Tabeshfar PROS 13, and faculty member Dr. Fred Harrington.

To thank graduates for their impressive fundraising efforts, the Boston University Class Gift Campaign Committee attended the BBQ with giveaways for graduating students. The GSDM Alumni Association gave commemorative glass steins inscribed with a special message. Students made class gifts in honor of a classmate, patient, faculty, staff or family member. Each honoree received a commemorative card with a personalized note along with a commemorative coin.

Continuing the festivities into the following week, Associate Dean for Clinical Education Dr. John Guarente hosted a Cake Party for seniors on Thursday, May 16, 2013, on the School’s sixth floor. DMD and AS graduates waited eagerly for slices of the huge cake celebrating their upcoming graduation.

Both Dr. Guarente and Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter welcomed the students. Dr. Guarente noted that this class was truly unforgettable and asked each student to keep him apprised of future plans. Dean Hutter noted the remarkable strength the students showed in recent weeks following the tragic events at the Boston Marathon.
