Event Highlights: Film Screening – SNOVI
On Monday, April 1, in conjunction with Center Director Vivien Schmidt’s class on “Critical Moments and Memory,” the Center hosted a screening of Snovi, a 15-minute fictional account of a Bosnian composer, struggling to cope with the aftermath of the Serbian aggression in the 1990′s. “His memories interweave in fragments, forming a mosaic of a painful past not yet understood or realized. The film’s unique structure and stunning cinematography explores the conscious and subconscious ways we confront trauma, blurring the line between imagination and memory, nightmares and dreams. The screening, which was attended by approximately 40 people, was followed by a discussion with writer/director and BU alumnus Reshad Kulenovic, a native of Bosnia, who discussed, among other things, the making of the film, the tensions and circumstances in the Balkans.
The film is based on the short story “Dreams,” by John Bernstein, a College of Communication associate professor and director of the Screenwriting Program, who described Reshas as “an extraordinary young artist blessed with a unique voice and vision” and Snovi as “one of the most visually stunning films I have ever seen here at BU.” The film, which has been shown at a number of festivals around the world, was selected by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as a finalist for a Student Academy Award.
