Senate Education Committee Chair Seeks Input

SENATE EDUCATION COMMITTEE CHAIR SEEKS INPUT

On Monday, Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) released three white papers written by his staff in anticipation of renewing the Higher Education Act this year. Chairman Alexander is asking higher education stakeholders to provide feedback on three issues: the level of risk-sharing expected of universities in relation to student borrowing, how to facilitate more transparency and flexibility in the accreditation process, and better methods for the federal government to collect student data and consumer information. Interested parties should submit comments by April 24.

NIGMS RELEASES STRATEGIC PLAN

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) at the National Institutes of Health released its strategic plan for 2015-2020 earlier this month, outlining the priorities and initiatives that NIGMS plans to pursue over the next five years. The plan calls for more focus on investigator-led grants, strengthening and diversifying its research training programs, bolstering the development of research tools and infrastructure, and improving the “rigor, reproducibility, and transparency” of its biomedical research.

RESEARCH WORKSHOPS TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK

The Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Research is hosting two workshops next week on the Charles River Campus. On Monday, Building a Successful Research Program will provide strategies and tips for early stage investigators making the leap to independent research. The Working with Federal Agencies workshop on Wednesday will help faculty learn how to establish and maintain effective long-term partnerships with federal agency funders.
