2016 GRAP – Health Sector Corruption Risk Assessment in 5 Countries (01-Vian)

Opportunity ID: 01-Vian

Project Title: Health Sector Corruption Risk Assessment in 5 Countries

Faculty Mentor: Taryn Vian and Rich Feeley

Description Statement:

Corruption is a serious challenge to achieving the goals of population health and sustainable development. In 42 out of 109 countries surveyed by Transparency International, more than 50% of respondents said that the health sector was corrupt or very corrupt. Weak government institutions, lack of citizen involvement, too much discretion in the hands of government officials, eroding professional standards, and lack of transparency and accountability, all help create an environment where corruption can take hold. We are engaged in a project funded by the Council Of Europe/European Union, to assess the risks of corruption in the health sector in Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine. The risk assessment will be implemented in a phased approach to include participation from national counterparts, and will include review of documentation related to health policies and systems, and key informant interviews.
