GRAP 2017 – WiseMama Uganda Project (01-Sabin & Messersmith)
Project Title: The WiseMama Uganda Project
Faculty / Researcher Mentor: Lora Sabin and Lisa Messersmith
Description Statement: The WiseMama Study was a randomized controlled trial that aimed to assess an intervention designed to improve HIV treatment retention and adherence among pregnant and post-partum women in Uganda. The intervention made use of a real-time adherence monitoring tool to provide triggered text message reminders combined with data-informed counseling to HIV-positive women on antiretroviral therapy from early pregnancy through 3 months postpartum. Dr. Lora Sabin and Dr. Lisa Messersmith seek one MPH student to assist with literature reviews and manuscript writing for the results of this intervention.
Scope of Work: Between January and May 2018, an MPH student will work closely with Dr. Sabin and Dr. Messersmith to carry out the literature reviews needed for the manuscripts on adherence outcomes on WiseMama, as well as barriers and facilitators to retention in care. GRAP student will also assist in data analysis and manuscript writing as needed.
Minimum skills desired:
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Experience conducting literature reviews
- Endnote experience or ability to learn
- Knowledge of an/or proven interest in HIV retention in care, maternal/child health, global health
Time / Date Expectations: Student will work mostly independently, with semi-regular (biweekly or monthly) meetings with Drs. Sabin and Messersmith. Expected time commitment is 5 hours/week throughout the course of the semester, but workload may vary from week to week.
