BU Initiative on Cities – Student Fellowship Opportunities for this summer, check them out ASAP!

The Boston University Initiative on Cities is delighted to announce the creation of two new student fellowship opportunities for this coming summer.

They include:

  •   One summer fellowship for a BU graduate student to work in the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics in Boston. The Urban Mechanics office is the City’s award winning internal civic innovation team.  

  •   Multiple fellowship stipends for undergraduate or graduate students who have secured unpaid internships with a city government agency or department. Students may apply for financial support via the Initiative on Cities. Internships may be in any city and in any government agency or department, including health, economic development, education, housing, environment, urban planning, etc, anywhere in the world.

WHAT: "Leadership in the African context" a talk by Iyabo Obasanjo

Dr Obasanjo graduated from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1988 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. She did her compulsory one year post-graduation national service at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Ibadan where she taught and conducted clinical veterinary services.  She proceeded to University of California at Davis where she obtained a Masters in Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) and then to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York to obtain a PhD in Epidemiology.

Her post-doctoral research fellowship was at the Department of Comparative Medicine at Wake Forest University, School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she researched using female primates to model the effects of hormonal interventions on menopausal women.

After her post-doc, she worked in Clinical Research in the Unites States managing Phase 1 to IV clinical trials first as a statistician using her epidemiological training and ending up as a Project Manager, managing complex clinical studies for various diseases for submission to FDA for approval.

In 2003, she moved back to Nigeria where upon participation in political activities she was appointed the Commissioner for Health for her state of origin. In that position she managed all the public health activities of the state comprising of preventive programs, service delivery and outreach activities.  At the next elections in 2007, she contested and won a seat to the Nigerian Senate and was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health for the next four years, until her term ended in 2011.

She was a 2012 and 2013 Advanced Leadership Fellow at Harvard University and is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the African Presidential Center of Boston University.  Her interest is in developing advocacy for improving education, health and economic opportunities for African girls and women.  She has several scientific, newspaper and journal publications.

The Bixby Center for Population, Health and Sustainability has two openings at the Associate Specialist level. The positions are two-year appointments.  Position involves onsite collaboration with the David & Lucile Packard Foundation in Los Altos as part of their Program Research Analyst initiative.

Duties: Work closely with the Bixby Center’s family planning and reproductive health researchers in the design and implementation of projects in developing countries.  Develop and implement own research project on topics approved by the Bixby Center and Packard Foundation in either the South Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa program.  Work on a range of projects related to population and reproductive health including impact of programs, lessons learned from the field, monitoring and evaluation and grant making.  Required to perform literature reviews, analyze and summarize results and present scientific papers at professional meetings. Travel to focus countries to conduct monitoring activities required on a periodic basis.  Will communicate with grantees of the Foundation and external consultants supporting the implementation of population and reproductive health programs.

Qualifications:

Basic

          Master’s or equivalent in Public Health or related advanced degree by the time of application.

 

Additional

          Experience with population and reproductive health in developing countries.

          Strong quantitative skills and knowledge of research methods.

          Communication and writing skills to share emerging evidence and its application in the field.

          French language skills for work in Sub-Saharan Africa.

          Ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of basic monitoring and evaluation concepts. 

          Familiar with health systems and health care provision and developing IEC (information, education, communication) materials for reproductive health topics. 

          Able to use data sets and knowledge of statistical analysis. 

          Experience with program evaluation in developing countries. 

          Willing to travel regularly (up to 20%) to the countries where research is conducted.

 

Preferred

          Prior work experience in South Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa.

About Our Program

Currently, the program has 120 fellows - technical specialists and advisors to USAID and its partners - and a summer cohort of about 40 graduate-level interns, with other internships throughout the year.
