BUSPH Career Fair – Thursday, Feb. 25

The BUSPH Annual Career Fair will be held next Thursday,  February 25th from 2-6 PM in the Hiebert Lounge.  Don’t miss this opportunity to meet over 40 employers.  A good percentage of these organizations have hired one or more of our GH graduates within the last few years.

To register, please RSVP on CareerLink  (www.sph.bu.edu/CareerLink) by noon on Monday February 22nd to be sure and get the packet of information that will help you get the most out of this very important event.  The Career Fair is not just for students graduating this May, because many of these organizations also offer practicum opportunities. In addition, we strongly recommend non May grads attend because it is a great chance to learn about organizations you will want to target when you are near graduation and start you job search in earnest!

Student leaders needed for Social Enterprise Ideation Labs

ArchGrpU Social Enterprise Ideation Labs

Archimedes Project is recruiting student leaders to organize Ideation Labs at their universities. An Ideation Lab brings together a diverse and engaged group of students for three days to design a practical, scalable business model for a clean water or sanitation enterprise. From March to November ArchGrpU Student Coordinators lead a planning team of fellow students to plan and manage event logistics, recruit experts and mentors, raise funds, and research country specifics and appropriate technologies. Interested students can learn more and apply at archgrp.org/archgrpu.

The University of Massachusetts Boston Film Series is an initiative of the Chancellor's Office. This monthly series, which is free and open to the public, showcases innovative and thought-provoking filmmakers and their work.

The UMass Boston Film Series pays particular attention to emerging and iconic directors of acclaimed documentaries that have obtained recognition for their unique, relevant, and exceptional cinematic efforts. The series hosts filmmakers for in-person Q&As moderated by curator and lecturer Chico Colvard. The Film Series also partners with UMass Boston faculty, film industry insiders, and local organizations to participate in post-screening panel discussions about the issues central to the featured films. Ultimately, the UMass Boston Film Series aims to create a synergy of place around the moving image.

Student Spring Semester MBTA Passes – Jan. 11 Deadline

Attention Students: Please note that the deadline for spring semester discounted MBTA pass applications is Monday, Jan. 11, 2016. This is for passes February-May 2016.

You may submit applications before intersession. Apply for spring semester discounted MBTA passes at the TranSComm Office at 710 Albany St. or visit www.bumc.bu.edu/transcomm and print the application, the mail completed application with your check to TranSComm before Jan. 11.

The TranSComm office is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The office will close at 1 p.m. Dec. 24 and will reopen on Jan. 4, 2016. Happy holidays!

Martin Philbert

Dean and Professor of Toxicology, University of Michigan School of Public Health

Martin Philbert is professor of toxicology and dean of the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984 from the College of Arts and Technology at Cambridge and his doctorate in 1987 from the London University Royal Postgraduate Medical School. He was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship in the Neurotoxicology Laboratories at Rutgers University from 1988 to 1990. Philbert served as a research assistant professor at Rutgers’ Neurotoxicology Laboratories until 1995, when he joined the faculty at the University of Michigan School of Public Health as an assistant professor of toxicology. He was promoted to associate professor in 2000 and to professor in 2004. He served as associate chair for research and development in the environmental health sciences department from 2000 to 2003. In 2004, Philbert was appointed senior associate dean for research of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, a position he held through 2010 when he was appointed dean. He also served as interim director of the Center for Risk Science and Communication from 2004 to 2010.

Philbert has maintained a continuously federally funded portfolio of basic research activities throughout his career. His research focuses on the development of flexible polymer nanoplatforms for optical sensing of ions and small molecules and the early detection and treatment of brain tumors. Other research interests include the mitochondrial mechanisms of chemically induced neuropathic states. Most recently his work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Air Force, and the National Cancer Institute. He is the author of more than 150 peer-reviewed scholarly manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters.

Philbert is chair of the newly formed US–EPA Chemical Assessment Advisory Committee, which provides peer review of risk assessments produced under the auspices of the EPA’s Integrated Risk Information System, and is a standing member of the Agency’s Science Advisory Board. He also served a four-year term on the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and provides consultation to the federal agencies on a variety of issues surrounding emerging nanotechnologies, nanomedicine, health, and safety. Philbert is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science (USA), a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), a fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (USA), and a member of the Division of Earth and Life Sciences of the National Academy of Science (USA).
