The SPH Events Team is looking for volunteers

Next month Dean Martin Philbert, University of Michigan School of Public Health, will be speaking at our Public Health Forum on December 15th in Hiebert.

Volunteers needed for the following:

(1) 2 Students/Staff/Faculty volunteers to greet people/usher them towards the express elevator

(2) 2 students/staff/faculty volunteers to pass mics during Q&A

(3) Students who are interested in meeting with Dr. Philbert from 12-1pm for lunch on the 15th prior to the forum.

(1) & (2) can be the same two people.

If you are able to volunteer or attend lunch, please email Meg Keating with your availability.

Susan Bell, guest speaker for Sociology Dept Seminar

The Department of Sociology’s next talk in their seminar series will take place on Friday, Dec 4th at noon in SO 241. Susan Bell will present on “Interpreting for Immigrants in Hospital Clinics: An Ethnography of Outpatient Care in Maine."

Susan is the Chair of the Sociology Department at Drexel University and past Chair of the ASA’s Section on Medical Sociology. Her recent edited volume with Anne Figert is Reimagining (Bio)Medicalization, Pharmaceuticals and Genetics: Old Critiques and New Engagements..

BUMC Provost Guest Lecture: “Extending a Hand: Dr. Salman Zarka on the humanitarian treatment of Syrian casualties in Israel”

Salman Zarka, MD, MPH, Director General of Ziv Medical Center, Safed, Israel

Prior to his position at Ziv Medical Center, Dr. Zarka served as a Colonel in the Israel Defense Forces for 25 years in a variety of positions, the last of which was as Commander of the Military Health Services Department. Prior to this position, Dr. Zarka was the head of the Medical Corps of the Northern Command and Commander of the Military Field Hospital for the Syrian casualties in the Golan Heights.

Dr. Zarka graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa in 1988. He received a master's degree in Public Health from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, as well as a master's in Political Science from the University of Haifa.

Dr. Zarka will be accompanied by Jennifer Sieber, Director of Academic Affairs, Consulate General of Israel to New England.

March on Mass Ave.

Please join students, staff, and faculty for a March on Mass. Ave. on Tuesday, November 17. The March on Mass. Ave. will be a walk demonstrating solidarity with the Black students and the University of Missouri and acknowledging racism on campuses around the country, including our own. Marchers will walk along Mass. Ave. chanting and holding signs if they wish and circle back to the Talbot Green for a moment of silence. The Students of Color for Public Health will hold a meeting on the same evening at 5 p.m. in L110 open to students who want to debrief about the recent events around the country and the day’s activities. To join the march, meet in front of L building at 11:30 a.m. Supporters will march/walk on Mass. Ave. and circle back to Talbot Green by 11:45 a.m. or 11:50 a.m. For more information, see our Facebook event page.

Dimple Mirchandani (SPH'15), current E3! Ambassador for the The White House Asian American and Pacific Islanders, in collaboration with Boston University School of Public Health Students for Quality Health Care (SQHC) is proud to present a panel discussion with global health and mental health professionals. The discussion will focus on mental health for Asian American and Pacific Islanders along with education, public service, and immigration via topics such as “de-stress and distress”. The event will also highlight resources for students and tips during final exams. Come join this discussion on Monday, November 16th, BU Medical Campus - Room L311, 5-5:50 PM. Food and light refreshments will be provided.

BU infectious disease experts are at the forefront of research of illnesses that are – or have the potential to become – major public health concerns. Learn about the cutting edge diagnostics, vaccines, and treatments these faculty are developing to contain the pathogens that threaten our health and hear about how BU researchers are working towards extending our life expectancy and increasing overall health.
