Background:
The Blackstone Community Center (BCC) is part of the Boston Center for Youth & Families (BCYF) network whose mission is to enhance the quality of life of Boston’s residents by partnering with various organizations, including Boston University, to offer a wide range of comprehensive programs and activities according to neighborhoods needs and interests. Boston University has partnered with the BCC, has made a financial investment and is committed to providing excellent health and wellness programs to the South End. The Boston University Fitness and Wellness Center at BCYF Blackstone is staffed exclusively by Boston University fitness personnel. The Cooking Matters health promotion initiative, directed by BU faculty, complements the BU Fitness and Wellness Center.

The Blackstone Committee identified three broad questions related to the larger BU/BCC partnership:
1. How to expand the program to engage more BU students?
2. How to sustain the program/partnership over time?
3. How to package and disseminate the program to more venues (E.g. other BCYF settings, etc.)?

With these questions as context, the Blackstone Committee agreed that a practicum opportunity associated with Cooking Matters be created that would enable students to:
A. Develop skills in program implementation
B. Demonstrate formative and process evaluation skills
C. Identify factors and make recommendations that will contribute to the sustainability of Cooking Matters with potential relevance to other BU/BCC programmatic activities.

Practicum Description:
This practicum will provide qualified students*(must have completed SB822, Evaluation Research) a collaborative community-based learning experience at the Blackstone Community Center (BCC) in Boston’s South End neighborhood. Working as a team (#4), BUSPH students will partially fulfill their practicum requirements by participating in an exciting practicum that will include the following components:

1) Train-the-trainer instruction that will provide the knowledge and skills required to conduct 5 one-hour cooking instructions with a group of adolescents youth members of the BCC;

2) Opportunity to conduct a program formative and process evaluation that will inform effective future and on-going Cooking Matters program implementation;

3) Instruction (both face-to-face augmented with on-line resources) regarding strategies to ascertain Cooking Matters and broader BU/BCC partnership sustainability;

4) Opportunity to conduct a sustainability assessment and to formulate recommendations to BU/BCC leadership.

In addition, this practicum will increase the following practice competencies:

Practicum Deliverables:
The team will generate a written report and deliver an oral debrief/ report to the BU/BCC partnership leadership that includes a summary of methods, findings and recommendations that will contribute to improved program implementation, partnership sustainability and positive community impact.

Data Analyst Intern

An independent state agency, the Betsy Lehman Center is charged with fostering a statewide program of research, data analysis, and information-sharing that engages health care agencies, providers, and consumers in initiatives that will reduce medical error and enhance patient safety in the Commonwealth. The Center was re-established by Chapter 224 of the Acts of 2012, An Act Improving the Quality of Health Care and Reducing Costs through Increased Transparency, Efficiency and Innovation, and is supported by the state’s Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA).

The Betsy Lehman Center is seeking an experienced candidate for a 6-month, full-time analyst internship. The analyst will work with the Center’s research director and other personnel to analyze data pertaining to patient safety in Massachusetts. Applicants should be current students or recent graduates of quantitative-oriented degree programs with substantive prior experience working with data and the ability to clearly communicate results to diverse audiences. The successful analyst will communicate proactively, work both independently and collaboratively, have excellent attention to detail, and aspire for continuous learning and professional development.

Duties:

 Collect, construct, and analyze data pertaining to patient safety, such as reported adverse events and medical claims
 Utilize appropriate software (e.g., Excel and SAS) as needed to summarize data and perform more complex analyses
 Create clear and concise graphics, including charts and tables, to visually represent data and communicate inferences to diverse audiences
 Help develop and maintain systems to manage, organize, and track multiple datasets from various sources
 Ensure adherence to all state standards for secure use of data including documentation and storage
 Assist the Center’s Director of Research and Analysis with other tasks as necessary

Qualifications:

 Bachelor’s degree with quantitative focus (e.g., statistics, engineering/computer science, economics, and/or public health); may be currently pursuing

Communications Intern

Health Policy Analyst Intern

CHIA’s Health System Finance team is looking for a talented Health Policy Intern to join a dynamic team that is dedicated to monitoring health care delivery and financing systems in the Commonwealth by providing meaningful, accurate analytics. The primary role of the Health Policy Intern is to provide analytic support to projects related to health care financing in the Massachusetts health care system.

Operational Planning and Data Curation Intern

The mission of the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes.

CHIA is seeking two summer interns to support MA APCD Information Technologies (IT) operational planning and data curation. Duties will include, but not limited to, attending CHIA operational meetings, writing and creating documentation to support CHIA operational processes, working directly with Information technology managers and directors, performing minimal health care data analysis, and learning about the Commonwealth’s health care resources and the use of those resources. Ideal interns should be deeply interested in large data operations, management of IT groups, health care data, and health policy.

Interns will work up to 37.5 hours week in downtown Boston. All interested candidates must submit a resume, cover letter detailing why they would like spend the summer working at CHIA and specifically why they’d like to work in CHIA’s IT group.

Project Management Internship

Quality Assurance Internship

The mission of the Center for Health Information and analysis is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes.

This position will assist technical staff in running quality assurance checks against data releases, and other processed data output. This may include output results from groupers (DxCG, ETG, DRG), and other data enhancement activities such as Master Data Management - Member, and Provider responsibilities. The analyst will be responsible for oversight of data requests – review, logging and tracking requests, and assisting in the extraction and delivery processes. S/he will develop a strong knowledge of APCD and other Health Care related data, and work with internal IT staff.

Perform quality assurance for APCD Public Data Releases
Document Release Requests and monitor tracking status
Review release form requests to understand requirements and ensure the data provided meets those requirements

The Services and Strategies Team (SAS) Analyst Internship

The mission of the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes.

The Services and Strategies (SAS) Unit is responsible for CHIA’s strategy to support the legislature and other state agencies with CHIA’s information and analysis. We also help government agencies, researchers and others access and use the Massachusetts All-Payer Claims Database (MA APCD) and hospital discharge datasets.

The key duties of the Analyst in the SAS Unit include:

Assist in the review and tracking of applications to use the MA APCD and hospital databases and logging application information and investigator contact information into Salesforce

Work with Office of Communications to create a “gallery of success” for CHIA’s data assets

OVERVIEW
Health Leads is seeking highly-motivated, innovative undergraduate and graduate students to join our organization this summer. The Summer Fellowships are an opportunity to gain first-hand experience and insight into the operations of a national non-profit, the exciting work in healthcare and the non-profit sector as well as develop critical professional skills via workshops and mentorship.

Over the course of nine weeks (May 31-July 29), Summer Fellows receive an orientation to Health Leads’ culture and work closely with members of the National Team on a high-impact project within a specific department. At the end of the project, fellows give a final presentation to staff across the country, reflecting on their experience and sharing their end product.

Candidates need to be available for the full 9 weeks of the fellowship for 20 hrs/week. They do not need to be focused on healthcare but must have an interest in social entrepreneurial organizations. Fellowships are based in Health Leads’ national headquarters in Boston’s downtown crossing area. All Summer Fellows will receive summer housing at Boston University and therefore must be a current BU student or graduated May 2016.

II. DEVELOPMENT (2 POSITIONS)
We’re excited to welcome Summer Fellows to our team! Learn about internal operations in nonprofit philanthropy, while building transferable research, content development, and data management skills. Our Summer Fellows gain hands-on experience in developing and implementing revenue-generating systems and processes, navigating the ins and outs of Salesforce CRM, and providing logistical, research, and writing support for externally facing fundraisers. III. VALUE CASE – RESOURCE LANDSCAPE
Health Leads plays an integral role in helping patients access resources ranging from food pantries and childcare, to legal and job placement services. However, for patients living far away from a resource, their geographic location can impact their ability to successfully access a resource. In this position, you will have the opportunity to analyze the geographic distribution of our patients’ needs, particularly in comparison to the resource landscape. IV. VALUE CASE - PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
In this position, the Summer Fellow will explore primary and secondary drivers in our Program data for insights in developing the “gold standard” for process improvement. Is there a certain way we can conduct intake to help more patients’ address their social needs? Are there any particular methods of screening an individual for social needs that are more effective than others? This position provides the opportunity to contribute towards defining the best practice for addressing patients’ social needs in the healthcare sector, while honing skills in data analysis and communication. Help our Team understand Alternative Workforces such as CHWs and Case/care Managers, who may be working on social needs. Health Leads has traditionally worked with an undergraduate volunteer workforce, and increasingly we have customers who want to use Reach and other tools with full time staff to address patient social needs. We need an intern who would conduct a combination of literature review and interviews of current partners and selected others. Our intern would seek to answer the questions: How are these alternative work forces funded? What Capacity do work forces handle (# of cases, considering intervention level)? VI. LAUNCH AND IMPLEMENTATION (2 POSITIONS)
The Health Leads Summer Fellow(s) will spend the summer exploring an exciting opportunity to work with clients across the miles, supporting the Community Resource Hub and the West LA desk in Southern California. The fellows selected for this role will work remotely from Boston and hold a large caseload of clients, providing formal screenings for social needs, conducting intakes for those interested in working with Health Leads, and following up with clients to connect to resources. Fellows selected for these roles will have an opportunity to provide feedback to Health Leads about the process, including trends and themes. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to partake in manageable projects over the summer to support the California teams, including Launch and Implementation, based on skills and interest. By the conclusion of the summer, fellows will: Apply previous Health Leads’ Advocate experience in working with a high volume of clients with a range in needs, age, and population; understand the resource landscape in the greater Los Angeles area; understand the collaborative relationship between Health Leads and Kaiser Permanente; apply professional development skills while supporting the California teams on manageable projects.

GHFP-II's goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency's immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.

BACKGROUND
USAID/Rwanda's Health Team oversees a budget of over $100 million annually. The health portfolio covers child survival (immunization, integrated management of childhood illness), reproductive health (family planning, safe motherhood, fistula), infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, malaria), and health systems strengthening. The Health Team manages an integrated portfolio of activities with a vision to build capacity in Rwanda for sustained and improved health outcomes by providing innovative and responsive technical and financial assistance. A key area of assistance for USAID/Rwanda includes technical assistance in supply chain management and procurement of public health commodities.

Rwanda's public health supply chain system relies on central services of national quantification, procurement, and policymaking through divisions within the Ministry of Health. Health programs, including the malaria, HIV, family planning and maternal and child health programs, work with the central warehouse to establish national guidelines, finance, and procure the right quantities of essential commodities. Product integration for in-country ordering, distribution, and data collection allow for efficiencies at the district pharmacy and service delivery point levels. Ensuring data quality and utilization, collaboration between programs and supply chain levels, and building capacity in supply chain management skills, are key to strengthening Rwanda's public health supply chain system and ensuring commodity security, so that patients and clients receive medicines and health products.

A focus of USAID/Rwanda's supply chain program is technical assistance in health commodity procurement and supply chain system strengthening. In collaboration with the central warehouse, the Medical Procurement and Production Division (MPPD), activities address central functions for procurement, data management and utilization, supply chain integration, warehousing and distribution efficiencies, business process improvement, and long term strategies for supply chain sustainability.

INTRODUCTION
The Supply Chain Intern (Intern) will provide technical support and coordination services to support USAID/Rwanda's Health Team. As a member of the Health Systems Strengthening team, the Intern will work closely with the Health Commodity and Logistics Technical Advisor to assist with technical review and management of supply chain functional areas and programs. The Intern will work closely with the Health Commodity and Logistics Technical Advisor as his/her onsite manager.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Gaining experience in the field of USAID and USAID missions and learning how to drive change using data in a complex environment with many stakeholders.

• Shipping reports

• Contributing to technical discussions and suggesting supply chain best practices.

• Participating in End Use Checks for USAID-procured equipment delivered to the Ministry of Health, including conducting site visits to health facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Currently enrolled master's or other post-bachelor's degree candidate in a program related to supply chain management, logistics, business, information systems, pharmacy, statistics or relevant field; or, completion of such within the past 12 months.

BACKGROUND:

The Tuberculosis (TB) Team at USAID leads the United States Government (USG) efforts in the fight to prevent and treat TB, which kills about 1.5 million people annually. USAID programs focus on improving TB services in 23 countries, saving lives and preventing the spread of TB and multidrug-resistant TB. The goal of USAID efforts is to contribute significantly to the reduction of TB transmission and deaths globally. USAID TB Team is implementing the new USG TB Strategy (2015-2019) and National Action Plan to Combat Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR)-TB, which was recently released by the White House. Implementation of activities within the USG strategy and the NAP requires novel approaches as well as developing new projects and partnerships across sector.

INTRODUCTION:

The Multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis Project Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Tuberculosis Team in the Infectious Disease (ID) Division, under the Office of Health, Infectious Diseases, and Nutrition (HIDN) in the Bureau for Global Health (GH). The Intern will focus on assisting the TB Team with the implementation of selected key activities related to the multidrug- resistant tuberculosis. In particular, the Intern will assist the TB Team members with developing and supporting activities related to MDR-TB, helping with data collection and analysis, collecting best practices and lessons learned, helping with consolidation of reports and activities. The Intern will work closely with the ID Division Chief who will serve as his/her onsite manager, as well as with the MDR-TB Senior Advisor and other TB Team members.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
•Gaining experience in developing new projects and activities, consolidating and analyzing project data and demonstrating project results, as it relates to TB.
•Gaining a greater understanding of USAID work in TB and MDR-TB field, including work with USAID Missions, Implementing Partners and international TB organizations.

The Northeast Big Data Hub (@NEbigdatahub) is one of four Big Data Hubs established by the National Science Foundation to build public-private, multi-sector consortia to address high-priority challenges with data-driven innovations. The Hub is pleased to announce a Call for Proposals for its summer 2016 programs for early-career researchers and practitioners in academia and other sectors. Funding has been generously provided by the Computing Community Consortium (CCC).

The Young Innovators Internship Program will provide an opportunity for early career researchers to collaborate with small businesses, government agencies, and NGOs, using data science approaches to solve substantial challenges. The Knowledge Exchange Program is comprised of a Lecture Series and a Visiting Scholar Exchange. CHIA’s Health System Finance team is looking for a talented Health Policy Intern to join a dynamic team that is dedicated to monitoring health care delivery and financing systems in the Commonwealth by providing meaningful, accurate analytics. The primary role of the Health Policy Intern is to provide analytic support to projects related to health care financing in the Massachusetts health care system.
