Community Participation in the Hostile Terrain 94 Art Installation: Tag Filling
BU community members can now participate in the ongoing construction of the Hostile Terrain 94 art installation, which is located on the 2nd floor landing of the George Sherman Union (GSU), 775 Commonwealth Ave., until May 21. Through the installation, the human toll of the U.S. “Prevention Through Deterrence” policy is memorialized with the inclusion of over 3,200 toe-tags listing the names and other identifying information of the corpses of migrants found in the Sonoran Desert at the Arizona/Mexico border.
Students and BU community members can participate in assembling the installation by completing these tags, which are then placed on an enlarged wall map of the desert showing the exact locations where the remains were found. Participants must sign up for a time slot and be able to show their symptom status and follow safety protocols. The BU Arts Initiative will provide gloves and sanitizer. Please provide your own mask–thank you.
The Hostile Terrain 94 exhibition was brought to Boston University by the College of Arts & Sciences and the BU Arts Initiative, with support from Latin American Studies, the College of General Studies, BU History Department, BU Archaeology Department, and the BU Hub.
WARNING: The exhibition contains material that may be disturbing to some audiences, including: description of presumed causes of death and physical state of human remains written on the tags of the exhibit; images of personal items left behind by migrants while crossing the Sonoran desert at the Arizona/Mexico Border.
