Graduate Student Summer Fellow, IGS; Earth & Environment, College of Arts & Sciences
Melissa Martin, a 2025 Graduate Summer Fellow at the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS), is a PhD student in Earth & Environment in the College of Arts & Sciences. Martin is studying the impact of heat islands in urban centers. Initial research will include assessing how increasing ambient temperatures could affect health outcomes. In addition, this research will investigate how active cooling interventions could increase energy demand and cause power system congestion.
Her faculty advisor is Benjamin Sovacool (Professor, Earth & Environment, College of Arts & Sciences and Director, IGS) and her project is titled “Assessing Urban Heat Island Intensity on Building Energy Demand, Grid Congestion and Negative Health Outcomes.”
