Lilly Havstad Wins Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship

Lilly2014 Pardee Graduate Summer Fellow Lilly Havstad has won a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation research scholarship for foreigners to support continuing dissertation research in Portugal between September and December 2015. In September, Lilly will complete a year of fieldwork in Maputo, Mozambique where she has been collecting interviews, historical newspapers, and archival material for her dissertation titled, “The Missing Middle: Urban Foodways and the Emergence of an African Middle Class in Maputo, Mozambique, Early Twentieth Century to Present Times.” While in Portugal, she will spend time in the colonial archives based in Lisbon and collect additional interviews with Mozambicans living in Lisbon since sometime after Mozambique’s independence from Portugal in 1975.
