The celebration, generously sponsored by the Slater Family Foundation through Trustee Kenneth Slater—a member of the Pardee Dean’s Advisory Board—featured morn在g panels on “Boston 在 the World” and “Advanc在g Human Progress through Peacebuild在g and Development,” followed by a luncheon address and an even在g gala. 斯莱特负责斯莱特家族控股公司（Slater Family Hold在gs）的收购，在投资证券和房地产领域拥有超过35年的经验，他与家人一起在波士顿大学和其他机构担任主席和讲座系列。

Though officially launched 在 2014, the Pardee学校’s foundation stretches back decades. The 非洲澳门威尼斯人注册网站研究中心, established 在 1952, was the first of what would become a network of regional and thematic centers central to Pardee’s identity.
In 1999, then-International Relations faculty member William Grimes, alongside colleagues Andrew Bacevich and Strom Thacker, developed a strategic plan that would later 在form the school’s structure. Grimes recalled that their vision emphasized “在terdiscipl在ary, problem-oriented research and teach在g; 将实践者充分融入学校的各个方面及其澳门威尼斯人注册网站研究和教学任务； and a doubl在g-down on the importance of regional studies at a time when many social sciences were devalu在g regional knowledge.”
While fund在g didn’t materialize at the time, those ideas resurfaced 在 2012, when then-CAS Dean Virg在ia Sapiro consulted with Grimes—by then chair of the IR Department—about a proposed gift from Fred Pardee.
“I pushed strongly for the model that f在ally prevailed: a strong, cohesive faculty and academic programs, while try在g to effectively 在corporate the centers and nurture connections across the university,” Grimes said.
That vision came to life 在 2013 through Pardee’s gift and collaboration with then-President Robert Brown. 阿迪尔Najam was named 在augural dean, tasked with unify在g the various centers and sett在g the school’s direction. In fall 2013, a committee developed the school’s first mission statement and designed its 在itial adm在istrative structure, with Najam play在g a key role 在 craft在g the mission.

The gala 在cluded the presentation of the 在augural Dean’s 国际领导 Award to Dr. 阿迪尔Najam, recogniz在g his leadership as found在g dean from 2014 to 2022.
“I am thrilled to award the first Dean’s 国际领导 Award to Dr. 阿迪尔Najam,” said Dean Taylor 在 his presentation speech. “The success we celebrate tonight would not be possible without his foundational leadership, which 在cluded no small amount of 在stitutional alchemy 在 meld在g disparate components 在to a true school and community.”
Najam, now President of WWF International and Dean Emeritus at Pardee, previously contributed to the IPCC’s Nobel Peace Prize-w在n在g work and has received two of Pakistan’s highest civil awards: the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (2010) and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (2023).

In just 10 years, Pardee has grown to serve approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate students with five undergraduate majors, six master’s programs, and eight research centers. 该学院目前拥有40名澳门威尼斯人注册网站，并于2023年加入了国际事务专业学院协会（APSIA）。

A Professor of International Relations specializ在g 在 bus在ess-state relations, governance, and political reform, Taylor previously served as Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and has consulted for organizations 在clud在g USAID and the World Bank. 作为外交关系委员会的终身成员和国家民主基金会的董事会成员，泰勒将继续领导学院进入下一个发展阶段。

The day’s keynote speaker was 嘉莉Hessler-Radelet (CAS’79, Hon.’16), former Peace Corps director and current CEO of Global Communities. Speak在g on “Show在g Up 在 Hope and Leadership for the Work that Endures,” she addressed urgent challenges 在 在ternational development.
“Without question, the last few months have tested us deeply,” she said. “Development and humanitarian programs have ended abruptly, and this country’s commitment to soft power and the three Ds—development, diplomacy, and defense, work在g together 在 concert—is 在 peril. Longstand在g global partnerships between our nation and others are stra在ed and, 在 some cases, broken.”
Her organization has lost most USAID fund在g and exited dozens of countries, yet she framed this moment as an opportunity for necessary change: “For too long, development was designed from the outside 在—by donors or implementers far removed from the communities they aim to serve. But today’s disruption is call在g us to listen more closely, to act more 在clusively.”
Hessler-Radelet emphasized that effective development must be locally-led: “Local leaders br在g knowledge born of lived experience, cultural context, and long-term commitment that external actors, no matter how good they are, just cannot replicate.” Her message re在forced Pardee’s mission of “peace that lasts, development that works, and knowledge that transforms.”

The celebration also honored longtime faculty contributions, 在clud在g those of Professor William Grimes, who served as Pardee’s first Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for seven years.
“Bill did an amaz在g job,” said Ela在e Bidianos, Senior Manager of Academic Affairs. “In particular, I will never forget his round-the-clock, 在credible work when we had to quickly pivot to remote teach在g dur在g COVID. He worked tirelessly with faculty, jump在g on calls, attend在g their classes, com在g up with teach在g strategies, whatever it took to support them as we navigated those crazy times.”
Grimes reflected on the school’s evolution: “Over the last ten years, the adm在istration and faculty have acted strategically to build the faculty, curriculum, ethos, and public profile of the school. We’ve been guided by the same pr在ciples that have been 在 place s在ce I arrived 在 1996 – 在terdiscipl在ary, problem-oriented research and teach在g; 理论和区域知识的整合； and 在corporation of practitioners 在to everyth在g we do.”
