- Faculty & Staff
- September 6, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
As a complement to the four notes Dean Galea sent to the community with an overview of operations and resources available to our community, I wanted to add a note summarizing benefits available to our staff and faculty.
The Faculty and Staff Benefits Handbook is a comprehensive guide that provides information on the benefits available to all our employees. It is useful for new employees who are not familiar with the benefits offered by Boston University, and for existing employees who want to learn more about the benefits they currently have or may be eligible for in the future.
In addition to providing an overview of the benefits package, this handbook also shares details on eligibility requirements, enrollment deadlines, and other important details. It can also help our faculty and staff make informed decisions about their benefits and how to maximize their benefits package.
Overall, the Boston University benefits plans are designed to provide:
- Income for your retirement and other future financial needs
- Protection against the high cost of health and dental care
- Protection of your income in case you become totally and permanently disabled and are no longer able to work
- Financial assistance to your family members in the form of survivor benefits
- Assistance with educational expenses for you and your family members
- Other benefits and opportunities to help you fulfill personal and professional needs
As you review this handbook, should you have specific questions related to your own benefit elections, you may reach out to Human Resources at 617-353-2380 or by email at hr@bu.edu.
Separately, information regarding time off from work and other employment policies, may be found in the Staff and Operations Handbook for our staff members, the Faculty Handbook for our faculty members, or collective bargaining agreements for certain applicable positions falling under union purview.
Finally, at the end of each summer, the University’s VP of HR announces the holiday and intersession schedule. A complete list of the University Holidays and Intersession dates can be found on the Boston University website, /calendar/holidays.html.
Where business operations permit, we plan for early closing (1 PM) the business day prior to certain holidays, including Memorial Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving. Specific announcements as to the above are generally made a week prior to the referenced holidays.
By sharing this resource we aim to ensure that our faculty and staff regularly receive accurate and consistent information about their benefits, helping to streamline the benefits enrollment process. When you have a moment to review the Benefits Handbook, should you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to me or to Human Resources at hr@bu.edu.
Warmly,
Ira
