Career PREP (PH746) is a mandatory> course for on-campus MPH students centered around helping you design your career and life in a way that’s both proactive and intentional. We know careers today aren’t as straightforward as they used to be—they’re more about adapting and growing as opportunities come your way. That’s where Life Design Thinking comes in. It’s about being flexible and shaping your own path to create a work life that’s meaningful and fulfilling.

Course Structure

This course consists of 12 modules that give you the tools and techniques you need to stand out during your practicum and job search. You’ll go through self-reflection, exploration, and experimentation to get a better sense of who you are and what’s out there for you. We’ll dive into your personal strengths, identities, passions, values, and skills, while also looking at the bigger picture—like job market trends, industry shifts, and economic factors.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the Career PREP course, you will be able to:

  • Proactive Career Planning: Use the framework of Life Design thinking to take a proactive and intentional approach to career planning that aligns with your unique values, interests, and aspirations.
  • Effective Marketing Materials: Write a targeted resume, T-style cover letter, and “authentic conversation” elevator pitch.
  • Interest Incorporation:> Learn how to incorporate your interests and research the public health landscape to identify certificate-based organizations and positions.
  • Professional Profiles: Develop effective Handshake and LinkedIn profiles.
  • Networking Strategies: Develop strategies to expand your professional network.
  • Interview Preparation: Gain tips and answers to common interview questions to successfully land a practicum or job.
  • Opportunity Evaluation: Learn how to evaluate opportunities through self-reflection and successfully negotiate an offer.
  • Professional Etiquette: Acquire professional etiquette knowledge to be successful in the classroom, practicum or job setting.
