3rd Annual Health “Comm”petition Promotes Public Health Awareness

Five 波士顿大学 Medical Campus 学生 have been named winners of the 2025 Health “Comm”petition, an annual event led by 学生 at the 公共卫生学院 to promote health education and awareness.

Founded by 梓鸣宣, professor of community health sciences, the contest invites 学生 from SPH, the 乔巴尼亚和阿维德医学院 (CAMED), and the 亨利·m·戈德曼牙科医学院 (SDM) to create 健康传播s materials that address a public health challenge of their choice or cover a topic aligning with the theme of 全国公共卫生周 (NPHW). The 2025 theme, “It Starts Here,” celebrates the 30th anniversary of NPHW by honoring the major public health accomplishments of the past three decades and emphasizing the importance of grassroots public health advocacy.

“Comm”unity Choice: “Oral Health”

斯佳丽示罗, a staffing coordinator at BU and an MPH student studying 健康传播和促进, won the Best Overall award for an infographic encouraging patients to talk about colonoscopies with their doctors.

Xuan, who directs the MPH program’s functional certificate in 健康传播和促进, says he started the Health “Comm”petition to raise awareness of the importance of public health work, particularly 健康传播. 他说，他注意到临床实践经常激发人们的感激之情，从而促成捐赠，这可能是因为许多人都有接受治疗的个人经历，这种经历消除了他们的痛苦，但在公共卫生领域，没有类似的经历能唤起同样程度的支持。

“[In] defining what success means in public health, particularly in prevention, we often celebrate ‘no news.’ If things are working fine, if t在这里’s no major public health outbreak or emergency, if the community is generally healthy and safe—this is how we define that we’re doing a good job,” says Xuan. “However, this does not necessarily create headlines. I believe that t在这里 should be opportunity to celebrate our work.”
