Deciding on Grad School in Social Work and Choosing BUSSW
I found my way into a degree in social work by way of a medical background. After spending time in hospitals and in medical education, I found it is in social work that my drive towards justice intersected with my optimized use of self. I can rest in the discomfort of accompaniment, while also actively advocating for the disempowered—a unique blend of justice work I find in this field.
Having spent time living in Baltimore, I learned how the dynamics of a city—structured by race, class, gender—interact with its oppressed peoples. BUSSW was then the right fit, with its urban mission, to continue to explore this relationship and work to challenge its deleterious effects.
Now my interest is in working with adolescents, especially those impacted by trauma, in communities which are constantly striving for peace, but are too often impeded by violence.
