BUSSW alumna Sarah Lange, principal and founder of consulting agency New Era for Nonprofits, has published what Nonprofit Professional calls “the perfect book for anyone new to fundraising for nonprofits.”

The book, titled The Field Guide to Fundraising for Nonprofits: Fusing Creativity and New Best Practices, weaves Lange’s twenty-five years of nonprofit management experience around the ethical framework of social work.

“I have dedicated my career to helping nonprofits raise more money, build better boards, brag about the great work they’re doing, and chart a course to make the world a better place – especially for those who are marginalized, oppressed or left behind,” Lange says. “I feel pretty lucky to be able to serve as a champion of social justice each and every day.”

Lange started her social work education at BUSSW in 1991, attracted by the School’s urban mission and commitment to addressing racism and oppression. Since graduating, Lange has served at SSW as an advisor, adjunct professor, president of the Alumni Association, and member of the Boston University Alumni Council. She also established the Sarah Lange Changemakers Prize, an award given annually at Commencement, and has earned two School awards: the Distinguished Service Award in 2003 and the Hubie Jones Urban Service Award in 2007.

Lange says that the social work values, principles, skills and strategies taught by her SSW professors and field instructors are intrinsic to the work she does today. “[Nonprofits] ensure a quality of life here in the U.S. that we wouldn’t have otherwise. Think of a country without universities, hospitals, and other healthcare organizations, social service agencies, the arts… Would you want to live there? Probably not!”

The Field Guide to Fundraising for Nonprofits was published by Praeger and is available as a hardcover or eBook through most major book retailers.
