Dr. Salas-Wright Promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure

Boston University School of Social Work is pleased to announce that faculty member Christopher P. Salas-Wright, Ph.D. has been promoted to the rank of associate professor with tenure, effective May 13, 2019.

Dr. Salas-Wright, who is also a faculty affiliate at BUSSW’s Center for Innovation in Social Work & Health, joined Boston University in 2016. His research focuses on cultural stress and resilience among immigrants and the prevention of substance use among adolescents. This research has resulted in more than 150 scholarly publications and has been covered by numerous major media outlets including the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, USA TODAY, CNN, and ABC, NBC, and CBS News.

Dr. Salas-Wright is currently the principal investigator of a K01 Mentored Research Scientist Development Award, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Prior to the K01, Dr. Salas-Wright received research and training support from several federal funding sources, including the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, and NIAAA. In 2019, he received the Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Achievement Award from the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), recognizing innovative scholarship, rigorous approach to social work research, emerging influence in the field, and contributions to advance the profession.

He is also the author of Drug Abuse and Antisocial Behavior: A Biosocial Life Course Approach and editor of The Routledge International Handbook of Delinquency and Health. Dr. Salas-Wright serves on the National Advisory Committee for the Fahs-Beck Fund for Research and Experimentation and is Academic Editor for PLOS ONE. He is also an editorial board member of The Journal of Youth and Adolescence, The Journal of Criminal Justice, and The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Dr. Salas-Wright earned his Ph.D. in social work at Boston College and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in addiction studies at Brown University. Prior to his faculty position at BU’s School of Social Work, he was as an assistant professor of social work at The University of Texas at Austin.
