Social Welfare Policy & Opioid Epidemic Featured in 2021 Student Awards

To recognize outstanding achievement among BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) students, several received awards this month for their commitment to social work education.
The Lenny Bloksberg Award
Miryam Gerdine, a student in BUSSW’s online program, was awarded the Lenny Bloksberg Award for Excellence in Social Policy. This award is given to a first-year student who has completed the courses Welfare Policy 700 and 701, demonstrated outstanding merit, and been identified as having interest in and aptitude for social policy. It is given in honor of Professor Lenny Bloksberg, a former faculty member in the Social Welfare Policy department at BUSSW.

Welfare Policy 700 Poster Contest
Each year, student groups in Welfare Policy 700 create posters that educate and address social work policies. This year’s poster first place prize, by Charles River Campus students Jonathan Lazzara, Tamar Parmet, Riley Shaffer, Lauren Cohen, and Frances Kimball-Katz, went to a group of students whose work addressed the Opioid Epidemic, conducted a policy analysis, and made policy recommendations.
