Boston University School of Social Work Seeks Director of Development

The SSW Director of Development will direct the fundraising efforts for the School of Social Work including individual solicitations, annuities, bequests, corporate and foundation awards, contracts, and in-kind gifts. As appropriate, the Director will work with the Associate Dean for Enrollment Services and External Relations on alumni programming/activities. This individual will identify, integrate and coordinate School needs with fundraising plans and goals, central development effort, and SSW alumni programs. This is especially important as the university has entered into a comprehensive campaign.  The Director will identify, cultivate, and solicit leadership gift prospects for SSW. He/she will work with the Vice Presidents, Deans, Development and Alumni Relations staff, alumni and volunteers to achieve the goals of the School in concert with the development and campaign master plan. He/she will work with the Dean and development colleagues to create campaign goals and strategies to support the school’s overall strategic plan.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit leadership gift prospects–individual, corporations, foundations and reunion prospects—60%
  • Support the Dean’s work with the Dean’s Advisory Board—10%
  • Create development strategies and plan leadership events that promote the School.  Work with the Associate Dean in selected alumni programming efforts and SSW Alumni Association Board activities—10%
  • Work with University development, public relations and alumni staff on all of the above to maximize efforts and results—10%
  • Interface with the Dean on fundraising goals/activities and School activities/goals. Work with administrators and alumni to create broader visibility and strong image for the School. Publicize alumni gifts and those from corporations & foundations on an ongoing basis in all communication with alumni and friends of the School—10%

Qualifications

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree, a graduate degree is preferred, and 7 to 10 years of fundraising experience, preferably in an academic setting. It requires a professional who has a comprehensive understanding of development strategy, as well as major gift fundraising principles and practices. The Director of Development must have a background characterized by achievement, initiative, creative energy, well-refined organizational skills and a service oriented demeanor. Additionally, the Director must possess the proven ability to engage and work with prospects and volunteers, chief executives, prominent individuals as well as with all members of the School of Social Work community. Excellent communication skills are essential.  Travel and evening or weekend work is required to successfully meet the job responsibilities of this role. The successful candidate will be a mature team player who is highly motivated and dedicated to the goals of advancing higher education.
