BUSM Alumni Association

Founded by the first graduating class of Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), the Alumni Association was organized in 1874 with the following mission: To help alumni of BUSM stay connected to each other and the School; to promote and support the School and its students; and to collaborate with its faculty in advancing and maintaining a high standard of medical education. Members of the Alumni Association include all graduates as doctors of medicine from Boston University School of Medicine, and all graduates of the graduate medical sciences program. All members of the faculty who are not alumni of BUSM are honorary members.

The business of the Alumni Association is directed by the dean, the elected officers, and the executive committee, and is carried out by assistant deans Jean Ramsey, MD, MPH ’90, and Howard Bauchner, MD ’79. The election of officers takes place each year at the Annual Meeting and Banquet, held in May. All alumni are welcome and are encouraged to participate actively in the affairs of the Association and assist the officers and directors in the furtherance of its objectives, including fundraising for the medical school. The School of Medicine annual fund directs money to priorities and initiatives set forth by the dean. It supports student scholarships and other forms of financial assistance, as well as campus-wide student activities and symposiums. It also goes toward long-term planning for an academic center with state-of-the art classrooms, auditoria and laboratories, and a new Student Residence for safe, affordable housing adjacent to campus.

The Alumni Association supports the connection between alumni and the School through a variety of activities, communications, and programs, including: Alumni Weekend; class reunions; affinity receptions; class newsletters; a school magazine, Campus and Alumni News; and the Alumni Association e-newsletter. It also maintains an interactive and vibrant virtual community with its website and alumni Facebook page.

The Alumni Association serves as a liaison between alumni and students with programs like the Host-a-Student Program and the Shadowing Program. Alumni are a vital resource for students choosing career paths, specialties, and residency placements. Alumni also act as contacts for prospective students seeking information about the education provided by Boston University School of Medicine.
