This course develops students' ability to derive and simulate the equations of motion for mechanical systems, with applications to aerospace vehicles, robots, and other complex machines in 3D. Students will learn how to deploy both Newton's and Lagrange's equations of motion for systems of particles and rigid bodies, focusing on problems that involve environmental contact and constraints. We will compare and contrast different parameterizations of rotations, coordinate system choices, and minimal versus nonminimal coordinates for different applications. Numerical integration methods will be introduced for efficient simulations of these dynamics models. The models and simulations will be analyzed for long-term predictions of the mechanical system's behavior, including energy conservation, with application to feedback control. A final project will require students to derive the dynamics model of a mechanical system, simulate its motion, and optionally validate versus hardware.
