I served as a public defender for twenty years and was the first director of the Roxbury Youth Advocacy Project, which became the template for the creation of a statewide juvenile defender unit in Massachusetts — the Youth Advocacy Division. Also cofounded Citizens for Juvenile Justice (CfJJ). Became a juvenile court judge and retired as the First Justice of the Middlesex Division of the Juvenile Court. Write and present on systemic juvenile and criminal issues, hold teaching positions at Harvard Law, Northeastern University School of Law and Boston College School of Law. Winner of 2019 ABA Livingston Hall Juvenile Justice Award, member of ABA Youth at Risk Commission, on UTEC Advisory Board, and Access to Justice Fellow for More than Words. CPCS annually presents Jay Blitzman Youth Advocacy Award.
