Dr. Stevens was formerly a classroom teacher and social studies department chair at Framingham High School for 14 years, where she co-ran the new teacher program and spearheaded several initiatives to decolonize the curriculum and create more representation in Advanced Placement classes. Her work specializes in teaching about racism and using culturally sustaining pedagogy in the classroom. Her dissertation research focused on gender equity in the social studies classroom. Her publications and research since then have focused on race conscious teaching and gender equitable teaching. She has coauthored a book, Teaching History for Justice: Centering Activism in Students’ Study of the Past. At Boston University, she teaches several methods classes to both secondary and elementary preservice teachers as well as Introduction to Research. Additionally, she designs classes on curriculum and pedagogy across disciplines. She also serves as program director for the Social Studies Education program.
