A Letter to the Faculty from President Brown
Dear Colleagues:
I write to share with you news of the launching of a new program for our faculty. As you recall, an ad hoc committee, chaired by President Emeritus Aram Chobanian in the spring of 2007, recommended that the University develop a program to honor our most distinguished faculty members on the basis of their accomplishments in research and scholarship, teaching, and service.
Based on this recommendation and with additional advice from an ad hoc committee of the Faculty Council and the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce that we have established the William Fairfield Warren (WFW) Distinguished Professorship.
The goal of the Warren Distinguished Professorship is to honor a limited number (no greater than fifteen) of the most distinguished faculty
at Boston University, as judged by their record of scholarship and research, teaching, and service to Boston University. The Warren Distinguished Professorship is intended to be the highest honor bestowed upon senior members of our faculty who will continue to be involved in research and scholarship, and teaching, as well as in the civic life of the University.
The process of selecting the Warren Distinguished Professors will begin next fall with a call for nominations from the President to all faculty members. Final selection of the Warren Professors will be made by the President upon the recommendation of a committee composed of faculty members selected to review each nomination.
The Warren Distinguished Professorship is not intended as a means to recruiting faculty members to Boston University or as a vehicle for faculty retention. As the most distinguished professorship at Boston University, the Warren Professorship cannot be held simultaneously with another named professorship.
We will begin the selection of the Warren Professors in the fall. I look forward to announcing the first recipients in the next academic year.
