James A. Winn, Professor Emeritus of English, William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor, and former Director of BU’s Center for the Humanities (BUCH), died on March 21 in Vermont. James was an outstanding intellectual and scholar; after graduating summa cum laude from Princeton and earning his Ph.D. at Yale, he became a leading critic in eighteenth-century studies with a broad interest in literature and the arts. Over his decades-long career, he won numerous awards and fellowships, including the British Humanities Council Prize and the Yale University Press Governors’ Award.

Through his work in the English department and BUCH, James was a champion for the humanities, as well as his students and fellow faculty. He will be greatly missed. You can read more about his work and legacy at BU Today.
