Small Grants for Social Scientists: Opportunities and 11/15 Workshop

Small grants can be essential to launching a new research project, hiring student assistants, and doing the pilot work necessary for larger grants. Many foundations are eager to receive applications from social scientists doing cutting edge research. For instance, did you know that the American Philosophical Society has multiple small grant programs, including those supporting archival work, field studies, and research on Native Americans? Or that the Wenner-Gren Foundation supports recent PhDs in the social sciences whose work explores “what it means to be human?” And the Borchard Foundation funds work focused on the well-being of older adults.

Check out the Center’s external opportunities webpage or Foundation Relations’ funding opportunities page to learn of other small (and large) grant opportunities.

The Center is committed to helping social scientists find, apply for, and manage their grants. On November 15 from 12:30-2pm the Center, along with CAS Associate Dean of the Faculty for the Social Sciences Arianne Chernock, will cohost a panel on securing small grants (less than $20,000). Social science faculty who have successfully applied for small grants will share advice for identifying funding sources and developing applications. Panelists include Brooke Blower (CAS History), Deborah Carr (CAS Sociology), Spencer Piston (CAS Political Science), and Merav Shohet (CAS Anthropology). The discussion will be moderated by Associate Dean Chernock (CAS History). CISS grants administrator Chris Chiofolo will be available to answer questions about preparing proposals. Interested participants should reach out to center administrator Diana Hughes (ciss@bu.edu),
