Editor’s Confidential Panel on December 8: Tips for Navigating the Peer Review Process
Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals is an essential component of a successful academic career. On Thursday December 8, 2022 from 2:30- 4 pm, a panel of editors of prominent social sciences journals will share insights and advice for how to successfully navigate the peer-review process. The editors will discuss topics including: selecting a target journal, writing a successful manuscript, doing an effective revision, how reviewers are chosen, and the reasons why papers are rejected or accepted. The presentation will be followed by audience Q&A.

Panelists are:
Austin Frakt, Ph.D., is a Health Economist and Director of the Partnered Evidence-based Policy Resource Center at the Boston VA Healthcare System. He is also a Professor of Health Law, Policy & Management with the BU School of Public Health and a Principal Research Scientist with the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Frakt is editor-in-chief of Health Services Research, an official journal of AcademyHealth. HSR publishes outstanding articles reporting the findings of original investigations that expand understanding of the wide-ranging field of health care and help improve the health of individuals and communities.
Alya Guseva is editor-in-chief of Socio-Economic-Review (SER). She is an associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Sociology department. SER is the flagship journal of Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE). The journal promotes interdisciplinary dialogue between sociology, economics, political science and moral philosophy, through both empirical and theoretical work.
Sarah Phillips, Ph.D. is a previous founding executive co-editor of Modern American History, a new journal from Cambridge University Press covering all aspects of the United States since the 1890s. She is an Associate Professor of History at BU.
Henrik Selin is editor-in-chief of Global Environmental Politics. He is associate professor and Associate Dean for Studies in the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at BU. GEP examines relationships between global political forces and environmental change, with particular attention given to the implications of local-global interactions for environmental management, as well as to the implications of environmental change and environmental governance for world politics.
The session will be moderated by Deborah Carr, editor-in-chief of Journal of Health and Social Behavior, the medical sociology journal of the American Sociological Association. She previously served as editor-in-chief of Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences (2015-20) and deputy editor of Journal of Marriage & Family (2005-08; 2011-14), and Social Psychology Quarterly (2011-13). She is professor of sociology and director of the Center for Innovation in Social Science.
