Computational Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) Unveils Website and Programs

Computational Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS), an initiative of the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences, is pleased to announce its new website, spring events, and much more. For more information, visit /chass.

The CHASS Initiative was launched within the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences (CDS) in 2021 by Wesley Wildman (CISS affiliate and STH/CDS) and Neha Gondal (CISS affiliate and CAS-Sociology/CDS). CHASS refers to the application of computational and data-science tools within the humanities, arts, and social sciences. The toolkit – computing and data sciences – is powerful and surprisingly adaptable. The application domains – humanities, arts, social sciences, including public health – are vital for human self-understanding, self-expression, and self-enhancement. The dialogue across disciplines that arises within CHASS is priceless for building a vital university community arcing across the chasms between distant departments, and for demonstrating the irreplaceable value of every participating discipline.

CHASS aims to:

  • Catalyze research networks (many faculty want to do CHASS research but in most cases teamwork is essential to unlock new avenues of investigation and funding)
  • Enhance communication about CHASS activities (courses, research projects, events)
  • Share information about CHASS tools and their application in the humanities, arts, and social sciences, including public health

Throughout the spring semester, CHASS will host a series of quick chats. These 20-minute talks and conversations, delivered by BU faculty from across the university, will demonstrate the use of data-science and computational methods in a variety of humanities, arts, and social-science (including public health) applications. The one-hour session will include two accessible presentations, each with Q&A, and event recordings will be available on the CHASS website. View the CHASS calendar here.
