Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update – 4/27/18
During the week of April 30:
- On Thursday, April 26, the newly installed handicap lift at the East Newton Street entrance was inspected by the state’s elevator inspector and was approved for public use. The existing handicap ramp will now be taken off line and all pedestrian access to the School will be via the existing stairs and the new handicap lift directly off of East Newton Street. This arrangement will remain throughout the duration of Phase 1.
- Hazardous material abatement will continue in the School’s former cafeteria, and demolition of both interior and exterior is expected to occur this week. This will be a controlled demolition with excavation equipment. Proper dust control measures will continue in place for the duration of this work.
- Veolia Energy will be excavating East Newton Street to explore the current condition of utilities serving the GSDM and to determine the extent of work needed for the new steam connection to the building. This work has been permitted by the City of Boston to occur over the weekend (Saturday and possibly Sunday) to reduce its impact on traffic.
- The pile-drilling operation will continue at the East Newton Street and Newton Pavilion sides of the building, as well as along Albany Street.
- Installation of an emergency egress door next to the temporary supply store on the existing building’s first floor will continue into next week. We appreciate your patience as some of this work will be noisy on the first floor.Once the egress door is completed, emergency egress paths will be revised from stair #2 (north stair, across from first floor restrooms). Please take note of revised exit signage and revised egress plans.
- Hazardous material abatement in the Phase 1 areas will begin following approval of all containment protocols.
As a reminder to all, please be aware of all directional signage, as pedestrian travel paths may be altered at both the interior and exterior of the building. Your safety is imperative!
