Goldman School of Dental Medicine – Construction Update
During the weekend of May 18:
- The School’s steam service provider, Veolia, will be working Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday on East Newton Street and onsite between the Newton Pavilion and the School. The company will be installing a new steam service line to the building.
- The School’s onsite fire pump, which is responsible for pumping fire protection water from the basement to the upper floors in the event of a fire, will be undergoing maintenance and repairs on Saturday. During the repairs, the fire pump will be taken off-line, and a Boston Fire Department detail and pump truck will be onsite to provide coverage to the building in the event of an emergency during the shutdown period.
- Baseline readings of the building’s current heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems will be taken on all floors. These readings will be used to return the systems to their current operating levels once new systems are connected to them.
- Utility work on the Albany Street crossing, from the School to 650 Albany Street, will be undertaken on Saturday and Sunday in line with City of Boston permits.
During the week of May 21:
- Pile-drilling will continue around the existing GSDM building, on East Newton Street, Albany Street, and on the Boston Medical Center (Newton Pavilion) loading dock side of the building.
- Interior demolition activities will continue in the basement and on the first floor of the School.
- Investigation and rerouting of utilities around the site will continue.
- Unmarked utilities—that is, those not previously recorded on earlier building plans, but discovered during excavation and trenching—are being assessed, causing a slight delay on the start of installation of the earth-retention system (SOE). The project team is working to relocate these utilities and anticipates SOE installation during the week.
As a reminder to all, please be aware of all directional signage, as pedestrian travel paths may be altered at both the interior and exterior of the building. Your safety is imperative!
