Faculty & Staff Meeting Recap

The June 21 GSDM Faculty & Staff Meeting updated the GSDM community on a variety of ongoing and upcoming initiatives at the School.
Before these updates began, Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter welcomed everyone and asked staff and faculty who joined the School since June 16, 2010 to stand and introduce themselves.
Dean Hutter announced that for the first time a selection committee was formed to determine the winner of the Henry M. Goldman Award for Distinguished Service under the direction of Executive Director of Finance and Operations Tim McDonough. “The committee was comprised entirely of past winners of the award and as such truly represented the very best examples of service and commitment to our School,” Dean Hutter said.
Dean Hutter also announced that upon the Committee’s recommendation and in following the GSDM Applied Strategic Plan, his approval that there will be additional staff and faculty recognition awards given at our Faculty & Staff meetings during the year. In addition, as a result of the number of initiatives and activities Dean Hutter wants to share with the faculty and staff, a third Faculty/Staff meeting will occur during the coming academis year.
Frances Zaremba, Lab Assistant in the Removable Laboratory, was nominated and congratulated on her Distinguished Service Award by Director of the Predoctoral Removable Prosthodontics Laboratory, Dr. Ronni Schnell and Clinical Associate Professor, Ms. Leitha Rosenthal.. Many of you may not know that Leila , suggested Frances apply for a job at GSDM.
Dean Hutter said of Zaremba, who joined GSDM in 1998, “Fran supports and advances the mission of our School every day by ensuring that excellent patient care and dental education are delivered.”
Zaremba is on the way to becoming a Certified Dental Technician. She recently passed the comprehensive and specialty written exams and plans to take the Complete Denture Practical Exam soon.
Director of Finance John Reilly won a second, Special Distinguished Service Award. The Dean pointed to his knowledge of the Salud system, the fact that he worked two jobs until a new employee was added last week, and University-wide sentiment of his helpfulness and professionalism. Usually Office of the Dean staff are not eligible for the Award. However, the Dean made an exception due to the volume of nominations for Reilly.
Reilly joined GSDM in 2006 following a career in specialty retail and accounting.
Dean Hutter said of Reilly, “Under John’s leadership, the Office of Finance has dramatically increased and improved financial reporting and I am confident that under his continued guidance we will be in an excellent position as we continue to move forward in making our new facility a reality.”
Richard Rabbett provided updates on the BU Works initiative university-wide. This will update certain processes from the UIS system, launched in 1985!
Dr. Paula K. Friedman spoke about the Balanced Scorecards to be used to implement the GSDM Applied Strategic Plan.
Tim McDonough and Andy Burke reviewed a detailed list of upcoming facility projects, while also expressing the need to not devote too many resources to a facility that will be renovated extensively down the road.
Drs. Carl McManama and Thomas Kilgore spoke on behalf of the Dean’s Council on Ethics and Professionalism and reported that Ethical Fitness Training will commence very soon. A “Train the Trainers’ session would be taking place on June 23, 2011.
Drs. Friedman and Kilgore reported on the School’s upcoming accreditation, which occurs every seven years and will occur again in September 2012. There will be a dry-run this September. Dr. Kilgore spoke about OMFS accreditation that is occurring in October 2011. OMFS programs are s reaccredited every five years.
Dr. Steve DuLong spoke briefly about infection control and safety, Patrice Freeman-Lau about updated immunization and compliance requirements, and Catherine Sarkis about admissions for the upcoming 2011-2012 academic year.
